The YMCA Camp Thunderbird in Lake Wylie is celebrating 75 years of camping fun.
YMCA Camp Thunderbird was originally called Observer Fresh Air Camp when Curtis B. Johnson, the founder and former owner and publish of the Charlotte Observer, started it in 1936.
Mr. Johnson chose Lake Wylie for the camp with the vision of using the natural surroundings and Christian support and leadership to help each child achieve their fullest potential in mental development, physical well being, social growth and spiritual awareness.
