Lake Wylie Program Helps Homeless Students get to College
Lake Wylie homeless students are getting a helping hand from a local group.
The Lake Wylie-Clover Mayday Project is in its third year, but the group’s work isn’t possible without the public’s help. The project works with the Clover High School District to identify students who are homeless. The district sees about 60 to 75 homeless kids every school year.
“We have a lot of families that fall into that category, because of the economy, just because bad business ventures, difficulties in finding jobs, losing homes, those kinds of things,” said Marguerite Brown-Canty with the Clover School District.
Lake Wylie Clover Mayday helps fund students with transportation and school supplies, and sends many on tours of local colleges. Some who hadn’t considered furthering their education beyond high school are now enrolling in college programs, like rising Clover senior Lucas Dunnavant. He’s received help from Mayday and wants to be an engineer.
“The York Tech one really did open my eyes, because when I went there, there was a engineering part and I had asked a lot of questions,” he said.
The Lake Wylie Clover Mayday project started when a group of retired friends learned about the homeless students in Clover.
Jay Moore is the group’s president.
“Getting out of school– a child that’s going to be doing something worthwhile in his life, and probably have income for the first time in his or her life. That’s our program,” he said.
Lake Wylie Clover Mayday raises money through a golf tournament every October at River Hills Golf Club in Lake Wylie. For more information on sponsorship or to take part in the tournament, email Jay Moore at boppielw57@comporium.net.
