Lake Wylie Shopping – First new mall in 10 years
Thousands of shoppers turned out for opening day for Charlotte Premium Outlets, the city’s first new mall in almost 10 years. The Steele Creek retail center is the first new shopping complex in Charlotte since Northlake Mall opened in 2005.
The 400,000-square-foot Steele Creek mall, at 5404 New Fashion Way, is a partnership between Greensboro-based Tanger Factory Outlet Centers and Simon Property Group, owner of SouthPark and Concord Mills.
Outlet malls differ from normal retail malls in that they typically offer offseason or slightly defective items at discounted rates. However, more are selling new merchandise made specifically for the outlet malls.
“People are looking to be smarter for how they spend their dollars,” said Charlotte City Councilwoman LaWana Mayfield, who represents the Steele Creek area.
Saks 5th Avenue Off Fifth is the mall’s anchor tenant, and other retailers at the center will include Le Creuset, Kate Spade New York, Crocs and Sunglass Hut. The mall employs 900 people.
Situated 13.7 miles from Lake Wylie, Charlotte Premium Outlets is the closest mall to Lake Wylie and offers new opportunities to the residents of Lake Wylie.
